The most interesting work was by the artist duo Comenius Roethlisberger & Admir Jahic: They do color pencil drawings of youtube videos. At Scope Basel, they showed the installation ‘Star Wars Kid’ of 2009. It consists of 605 framed drawings of a short youtube video. I like this work very much, as it illustrates the overload of pictures available from the internet.

Scope does the most satellite art fairs: Besides the third edition here in Basel, currently they are also in New York, Miami, the Hamptons and London. Now it is conveniently located a two minutes walk from Art Basel on Sportplatz Landhof.

This time Scope is showcasing Art Asia, featuring a number of Asian galleries. Overall, there were 90 galleries form 20 countries.

So all-pervading is the cartoon theme that even a lot of the work that falls outside of it is infected by it. There is Without You Baby, There Ain’t No Us, a special project commissioned by the Scope Foundation from the young Swiss artists who call themselves The Invisible Heroes. This is the group who last year staged the hilariously Dada-esque installation with dollar bills for sale for a range of different prices. Apparently they are still looking for a buyer for the bill they priced at $4 million.

This time around they have produced a series of colored pencil drawings based on video clips sourced from YouTube. These are priced at $300 each, or $450 for some special “adult” examples based on YouPorn videos. Though these aren’t literally cartoon-based works — with one or two exceptions, like Buddy Rich at the Muppets Show — the combination of hand-drawn technique and video source material is enough for them to be dragged under the cartoonish spell of the fair. The same happens to Allison Schulnik’s Hobo Clown video at New York’s Mike Weiss Gallery, as well as Marc Séguin’s La Piñata, a stuffed American bald eagle painted with tar, presented by Miami’s Charest-Weinberg and suspended high above the fair’s entryway. In this context, the taxidermic bird seems to have flown in directly from the world of Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.

al sabah art collection, kuwait in celebration of a new space, sheikh majed al sabah has commissioned swiss artists comenius roethlisberger and his partner admir jahic to develop a series of work in memory of arab icons such as um kalthoom, mohammed abdul wahab, farid al atrash and omar al sharif. the exhibition is a tribute to celebrity figures of the arab world juxtaposed with snippets of the region’s energetic youth culture in works such as “crazy arab car stunts” and “girl afraid of her own shadow”. the show is being held as inauguration of the space for al sabah art and design, newly situated at the corniche along the arabian gulf road in sha’ab kuwait.

the provocative and entertaining collection of 129 small images and 2 overbearingly sized portraits heightens the struggle between glory and the giant, icon and idol, which is often portrayed commensurably through media and propaganda. in an attempt to disrupt the haphazard collection of archieved videos that youtube has become, comenius and ado

transformed the visual (virtual) language of “broadcasting” back into physicality by producing illustrations on handmade paper from virtual references with elemental art materials to do what they do best, that is, add to the confusion.

in each drawing (measuring 21″ x 30″), the artists have rendered a freeze-frrame, complete with video title, user ratings and number of views. the resulting collection is both distressing and humorous in its ability to highlight our often-conditioned predilection of arabic stardom.

so how does revisiting an era when arabic culture was at its height revitalize a tradition of receptive engagement with the rest of the world? how can we reposition ourselves as active participants of an international art dialogue?

Without You Baby, There Ain’t No Us.

One of my favorite installations at this year’s Scope Miami was “Without You Baby, There Ain’t No Us,” a special Scope project by Comenius Reothlisberger and Admir Jahic of The Invisible Heroes. Fascinated with the YouTube phenomenon, Comenius and Admir have created a series of drawings on handmade paper which document a variety of videos, from the utterly absurd (a video featuring an animated potato) to pop culture classics (like Apple’s famous Super Bowl commercial from 1984, above right).

In each drawing (measuring 21″ x 30″), the artists have rendered a freeze frame, complete with video title, user ratings, and number of views. The resulting collection is both distressing and humorous in its ability to highlight our often vulgar predilections.
